Have you ever wondered how elite koi farms maintain the health and beauty of the koi they produce? Today we will share some insights to the first biosecure Koi facility.
What is a Biosecure Koi Facility?
Firstly, lets talk about what “biosecurity” means. It may sound a complex word in the koi world, but it is at the forefront of koi production across the globe. Koi fish are beautiful, but raising the koi can be quite demanding and in some cases costly for koi farms. Most koi breeders and koi farms across the world start growing their koi inside, then move them to outdoor mud ponds to grow on.
Visiting Hazorea Aquatics
Here at Hazorea Aquatics they do things differently. Hazorea’s huge greenhouse facility is purpose built to maintain optimal water quality and steady temperatures. It is designed to limit the amount of germs and parasites developing in the water. Not to mention the ponds are fully covered, which also prevents any loss of koi from predators.
The huge systems at this koi farm involve a massive filtration system that removes any contaminants and unwanted pathogen’s. The facility is as sterile as it can possibly be. Upon entry we use alcohol gel to remove germs and bacteria from our hands, and we have to walk across a dip matt to remove germs from the soles of our shoes. All this is to ensure the facility is as clean as it can be and also helps to keep unwanted bacteria out of the facility.
The koi farm isn’t just about cutting edge bio security tech; it’s also a place where passion meets precision. The koi breeder and his team handle each and every koi with tenderness and a keen eye for detail. They constantly monitor water parameters, nutrition and behaviour every single day. This is not your average farm, it’s a carefully curated ecosystem where each factor is optimised to showcase every koi’s colours and vitality to their fullest potential.

Selecting Tosai Koi
Firstly, lets clear up the meaning of Tosai koi. Tosai koi refers to koi fish that are in their first year of life. They are the toddlers of the koi world, small but bursting with potential. These koi have just started to develop their intense colouration and patterns. They they are a true delight to watch, and are the perfect choice if you love the thrill of seeing a koi’s potential unfold over a period of time.
Choosing a Tosai koi is like becoming part of a fascinating art project. You get to witness early patterns deepen, colours intensify, and markings blossom into true masterpieces. There was quite some debate about which koi we liked the best, so of course we have to buy both of them.
The Tosai koi just keep coming. We have selected hundreds of koi and it has been pretty frantic for the last few hours while we sort through the koi we want to buy. Below is an example of some of the amazing Tosai koi we will be bringing back.
Selecting Nisai Koi
Now we focus our attention to something which this farm only has for a short period of the year,the Nisai koi. A Nisai koi is a koi which is 2 years old. This farm has a very good selection of extremely high quality koi. Some varieties in here are unique to this farm. It makes producing some of the most difficult koi varieties easy when it certainly isn’t.
We start off with some of the amazing Kumonryu koi available, feast your eyes on these beauties.
There are such a vast amount of super high quality koi in here and the choice is incredibly difficult. Another koi hot on the list is Doitsu Ochiba Shigure koi. We touched on this before we set off for the trip so the breeder has already put a few to one side for us.
Doitsu Ochiba koi are unique because they blend the earthy beauty of Ochiba patterns with the sleek and refined appearance of Doitsu scaling. The koi features a gentle autumn-like mix of grey markings over a bronze, yellow, or brown base, resembling fallen leaves resting on the water. Here are a few of the koi we selected.
Closing Off a Successful Koi Buying Trip
The day has been a huge success and we have secured some unbelievable koi. We’d like to thank the breeder and all the farm staff for making this another memorable trip.
